Better Paper Roll Pencil

Taking inspiration from childhood colored pencils, this pencil is captured in mono-material packaging composed of biodegradable paper derived from tree cellulose, with a water-based coating. The paper used is Sirio Rough, an FSC® certified eco-friendly paper produced from biodegradable and recyclable ECF pulp. It does not contain carbon, so it can better resist light, making it suitable for various printing methods. As the packaging is made up of only paper, it can be sharpened by pulling away the string near the pencil’s tip, rather than using a sharpener. As for the pencil itself, it has a rich color payoff and a soft application.

Color pencils are considered one of the most popular stationery items in Korea. The key point here was to focus on the packaging specification of your childhood memory stationery product and apply it on cosmetics. Inspired by colored pencils, this mono material packaging only consists of biodegradable paper with water-based coating - which can increase practicality without harming the environment. This product was listed as finalist for sustainable beauty awards 2023 organized by ecovia intelligence.

The purpose of this paper packaging is to make it eco-friendly by adopting the ingredients from nature to wrap the pencil around. This is characterized by biodegradation and disappearance in environmental pollution and recycling of plastics. This can contribute to the protection of the global environment. It is made up of paper called 'Sirio Rough,' an FSC® certified eco-friendly paper produced from biodegradable and recyclable ECF pulp. It does not contain carbon, so it can better resist light and be suitable for various printing methods. Also using sustainable packaging helps minimize greenhouse gas emissions—the so-called “carbon footprint”—which add to global warming. It also helps reduce waste and conserve natural resources for the next generation.

Traditionally, plastic PP, PE and ABS materials have been used. However, in case of our Better Paper Roll Pencil samples, paper is adopted as an outer packaging specification and is based on cellulose extracted from trees - which makes it environmentally friendly. Since it is mono material packaging, 100% paper, not only is it easy to use without sharpener since you can just peel off by pulling the string, it is also easily recyclable that helps prevent harming the environment for hundreds of years like other materials.

Through a sustainable concept and also a playful and vibrant color play, we hope to engage more with Gen Z segment who are value-conscious and tend to be drawn to eye-catching, photogenic brands and products. Through BETTER PAPER ROLL PENCIL we want to influence the clean beauty market especially indi brands, to spread ideas on developing more various mono material, eco friendly packages.

Diverging from the conventional use of plastic materials like PP, PE, and ABS, this concept adopts paper as the primary packaging material. Paper, derived from tree cellulose, aligns with eco-friendliness and recyclability, simplifying waste separation and disposal while supporting environmental preservation.

Along with other eco-friendly packages, this product was proposed to several indi brand clients who value the planet.

This is one of the most sustainable solutions for pencils, since it is mono-material packaging, 100% plastic free, 100% recyclable, and 100% naturally derived from tree. Despite its packaging features, the product itself is versatile and easy to use, since it does not need a sharpener and you can just peel off the string just like real color pencil you can find in stationery stores. The color payoff of the pencil is also rich, and applies softly, which means that this pencil is faithful to the basics.
